what is Management?

The bit in the middle. A funhouse ball-pit of grazed knees, bloody noses, snot and tears. A world of backstabbing and stomping on the fingers of the people on the ladder below you, whilst kissing the… feet?.. of those above.

For all their faults, Middle Management are often the bulwark against which, washes the waves of Executive desire.

As management, it will be your job to properly monitor and motivate the workforce whilst ensuring that company policies and procedures are followed to the letter. You will process all the documents and other bits of paper that your staff will generate over the course of the day before you send this information off to the admin department.

You will seek out new work and contracts; Design and generate contract tender documents; Build business proposals; Maintain staffing levels and, seek and recruit new staff as required. You’ll be responsible for team building, staff wellbeing, staff communication and engagement, succession planning and, anything else HR can’t be bothered with.

And you will do all of that, all at the same time.

It will be your job to be bitched at by the client, bitched at by your staff, bitched about by your colleagues and bitched at by the Executive, (who seem to think you have at least eight arms, eight heads and, twenty-two eyeballs that can operate independently of each other) because you’re not making enough money.

Woot! Sucks to be you.
